This is a broad based Level Three management training course which is designed for all levels of employers and employees. It is structured to concentrate on the management of occupational safety and health and is seen as a suitable qualification for the safety advisor or manager and as a precursor to the NEBOSH Diploma (level 6). There are no pre-entry qualifications, but the student must be prepared to assimilate a large amount of information with regard to occupational health & safety in the workplace.

Course Content

Our courses are programmed in the following ways

Route A: Block release - two consecutive weeks of classroom theoretical and practical work, examinations at end of course.

Route B: Online – this course is arranged to be done at your own pace through our interactive www.learnon-line.co.uk website. Follow the link for more details. The examination can be done at any centre, by prior arrangement.

Areas covered

The course programme follows the NEBOSH syllabus requirements and consists of 16 elements:

Module One (NGC 1)

  • Foundations in health and safety
  • Health and Safety policy
  • Organising health and safety
  • Risk assessment
  • Risk control
  • Promoting a positive health and safety culture
  • Monitoring audit and review
  • Incident Investigation recording and reporting

Module Two (NGC2)

  • Manual and mechanical handling
  • Work equipment safety
  • Fire safety
  • Electrical safety
  • Construction activities
  • Movement of people and vehicles
  • Control of hazardous substances
  • Physiological and psychological health

Module Three (NGC3) (not taught)

  • Practical examination

Are there any pre-requisites

Not specifically with regards to qualification, however because of the level of classroom study and the additional self study hours required outside the classroom delegates are advised to have a complete understanding of health and safety matters. To this end we require that you complete a pre-course project which must be delivered to us on the first day of the course. We also recommend that the delegate obtains a copy of An Introduction to Health and Safety at Work by Hughes and Ferret, obtained through our website. This book will be used extensively during the course.

Is the course assessed?

The examination process for the full General certificate is as follows:

There are three parts

  • NGC1 Management (Two hour written paper)
  • NGC2 Occupational Health (Two hour written paper)
  • NGC3 Practical (A workplace based practical assessment)

This means there will be specific requirements for registration onto our courses. Courses are programmed at a time to coincide with a LOCAL examination arrangement at the end of each of the two modules or with the national sittings in March, June, September or December each year.

These examinations have a cut off date for registration which must be adhered to, therefore, when considering which course to do you must have completed the registration process by this cut off date. We will of course do the registration for you.

Is the course accredited?

This course is accredited by the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. A certificate at QCA Level three is issued to the successful delegate

Who is this course is intended for?

Safety advisors or managers; moving into a safety role within a company or organisation. Anyone wishing to become a member of IOSH and work as a safety practitioner.
